This course is designed to teach museum educators how to develop and write formal lesson plans for K-12 programming. Topics will include: determining the purpose, content, and audience of your lesson; establishing objectives and desired outcomes; alignment with curriculum standards; reviewing and evaluating different lesson plan formats; writing and testing a lesson; and disseminating the lesson for use outside the Museum.

Students will review a wide variety of K-12 lesson plans from different types of museums. Each week’s lecture, chat, and assignment will be iterative, and students will end the course with a finished lesson plan that they can put into use at their museums.
    Course Goals
    You should complete this course with an understanding of the role of lesson plans in a museum setting, the different audiences that use them, the variety of formats and the essential elements to include, and a facility with working with curriculum frameworks on a state and national level.

    Participant Outcomes

    • Participants will finish the course with a usable lesson plan and the skills to create others.
    • Participants will develop a lesson plan template that best suits their own work at their museum or historic site.
