We know that budgets are always tight so we are compiling a list of sources of funds that can be used for professional development. Here are some that we are familiar with in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Iowa Conservation and Preservation Consortium

(NYSCA) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS FOR MUSEUMS

The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) fosters and advances the full breadth of New York State’s arts, culture, and creativity for all. In partnership with CNY Arts, NYSCA offers professional development funding for eligible non-profit museums and museum service organizations in New York State that are open to the public. With a simple application, you may be considered for awards up to $1,000. These funds may be used for professional development activities which occur between January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024.
New York State-based non-profit museums or museum service organizations may apply for support to attend conferences, bring in consultants for in-house training, or participate in training that directly relates to the museum’s work and connects to NYSCA’s mission. IMLS Museums Empowered: Professional Development Opportunities for Museum Staff
Museums Empowered: Professional Development Opportunities for Museum Staff, a special initiative of the Museums for America grant program, supports staff capacity building projects that use professional development to generate systemic change within a museum. Canadian Museums Association Professional Development
The Canadian Museums Association has professional development bursaries available for Emerging and Mid-Career Professionals.

Emerging Professional Development bursaries are given out to promote the exchange of knowledge and learning between museum professionals at the beginning of their careers. The program provides financial assistance to individuals to attend short courses, seminars, and workshops.

Bursaries for Mid-Career Professional Development are given out to build new competencies and increase individual and institutional performance. Bursaries are provided for specialized museum studies at a national or international level, such as specialized courses, seminars, workshops and symposia, as well as professional exchanges that promote continuous learning.

UK Association of Independent Museums (AIM) Training Grants

IIC Opportunities Fund
Needs-Based and Learning-Focused IIC Stipends
We are offering funding for up to 50 current IIC Student, Early Career and Individual members to support their learning, research and professional development during these challenging times. This could cover anything from skill building – possibly through attending events on or offline, enhancing conservation and digital skills or learning how to diversify income streams.
